if your that worried about running costs then i dont think the X5's for you.
my landrover, a 2.5 tdi does about 26-7mpg. this works out to about 20/21p of diesel per mile. (not including insurance, tax, parts etc! just fuel)
so an X5 which is about 20mpg could cost you nearly 30p per mile in fuel if prices reach the predicted 1.50 mark in a few months!
I would really advise diesel if ur hearts set on an X5, or any everyday car to be honest. yes with diesel at £1.20 theres not much saving over fuel, but it will still be cheaper than a petrol.
Have you run a diesel on LPG yourself

Haulage firms use it but not all the time as it can kill a truck engine so you can imagine what it will do a smaller engine

NOBODY has made it work 100% without destroying something so we simply stay well away and advise anyone else to do the same.
I've converted a fair few X5's now, mainly 4.4 and 4.6 but a few of the 3litres too.
The 3 litre is a bit sluggish IMO but then its posibly not quite as harsh on your pocket as a 4.4 or 4.6, tank wise we fit a 95litre tank (77 usable litres ) where the spare was, if the vehicle has air suspension (which I think they all have ? ) then the air pump needs relocating and I do think that is the only downfall to the conversion as I've never seen one converted that doesn't end up with a louder pump once moved.
Other but that they are a superb car, I've got several companys I deal with who have the diesel version and they said they are horrific on fuel and are thus changing to petrol versions converted to LPG.
