Default Can i fit bigger CALIPERS behind bigger wheels?

Maybe a daft sounding question but if you've seen the calipers you'll know what i mean
How much different, if any, would a 18" wheel be over a 17"???? I have enough ID for the brake disc with a 17" wheel but i need 15mm spacers with 35mm offset. I have 17" RL7's, I bought them because i thought they would clear the brakes but they don't!
So my question is, would 18" wheels be that much bigger, thus clearing the caliper, and allow me NOT to use spacers, and have the correct offset?
Without the spacers the caliper fouls on the spokes of the alloy.
I obviuosly don't want to buy another set of wheels only to find out they still don't fit, i'm thinking the obvious answer would be yes, but is the design of the centre of the wheel effected THAT much if get a wheel 1" bigger?
Edited to say i'd like to hear from people who actually have big brakes!
