As it was a lux has the current shell got the factory underseal and seam sealer, if not then it was probably reshelled into a motorsport shell by the original convertors

I KNEW that I had seen that reg before somewhere, and in my book "The Cosworth Fords" (bt Jeremy Walton) there is a pic of one of the press launch Es Cossies (Ford owned it of course at this stage), being driven around Brands Hatch.

The cars shown in the pics are J988 BPU, and parked up is J996 BPU.........Not your reg number I know BUT it was one of a fleet of Ford owned cars with reg numbers in sequence!.

and DAMN, DAMN for weeks since you bought your car I was thinking "why do I know that reg number" lololol
