The "R" does not cost more, it is just the successor to the "S".
The "S" was criticised for having too much shoulder roll under hard cornering, (which it did), the later "R" was the same tyre BUT with RE INFORCED outer shoulders to comabat the excessive shoulder wear, I can only go by my experience of them, and the "R" is actually WORSE in this respect.
The "S" lasted 16,000 miles the "R" lasted 5,000 miles, same tyre 195/50x15, same roads same driver, same car.
Interestingly the same car(astra 1.4 auto) now has GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 GSD3, which frankly I would NOT put on a BICYCLE.
When the tyres wear out again, it is going back to UNIROYAL RAINSPORT 2's
I get about 35% more mileage and more GRIP by using ULTRASEAL, as tyre temps don't rise with this stuff so much, and of course no punctures, otherwise I would have had 3 this year alone, just pulled the two screws and 1 nail out job done.
