They are reasonable to run. And specialists like TGM, CPL and TDi North etc make them even cheaper to run, they need to be serviced 12.5k so not too bad. And there not bad on fuel as I get 30mpg in my CTR on average.

Realistically for a decent 2001 51 plate your looking at around 10 - 11k and then a face lifted 2005 05 reg goes for around £15k (from what I have seen). Clearly all being imports prices are going to vary.
