dont remove the lot - thats madness.

I've done loads, and always leave the box in. Take the head off first if it's coming apart - and leave if off when going in if possible. When you lower the engine back in on the crane, you just need to wiggle it about until the shaft pops in. Make sure it's clean and greased. Gearbox means dicking around with suspension, driveshafts, minging hypoid etc..
