Hello there...newbie alert
I've just bitten the bullet and put some money down on an '81 950cc mk1 [my first foray into the blue oval I'm ashamed to admit] and was hoping to get a bit of advice.
My plans aren't anything huge...I know that the quickest way to go...er...quicker is drop a 1300 or bigger engine in, but I want to keep the little tyke and do a couple of jobs just to make it a little more happy.
The plan is as follows:
It comes with the following suspension upgrades- lowered XR2 springs on the front, lowered Mk1 golf springs on the rear and an XR2 panhard rod. I want to put a front and rear strut brace on but have heard different things. Can I fit a rear strut brace from a mk1 XR2/something new that should fit a mk1 XR2? I believe that the set up in the rear is the same. However, where can I get something for the front or is it a fab yourself job?
I'm contemplating ordering a set of Kent sports cams [FST2] to drop in and fit a larger carb and filter. Has anyone got any advice on what to go for with the carb and filter, ie make etc?
I also want a straight, rolled lip, round performance exhaust but am having difficulty finding one for the 950 engine [hardly surprising as 950 aint the pinnacle of performance]. Either a full system or back box but stainless steel really. Any advice on manufacturer and style please? At the end of the day I just want a nicer, better performing, more modern version of what's on there already [hence the understated 2-3" round route]
I also want to fit better brakes. Speaking to people I've heard differing advice and so could I have the definitive answer to the question of upgrading the brakes. I've heard about XR2 calipers bigger discs and braided hoses but I thought the suspension arms and legs were different...how do they compare? Where can I find them [either salvage or new kit] and how complex is the job [not the most proficient of spanner twirlers but I'll give owt a go]
Know it's a bit cheeky as a first post but would really appreciate some help. guidance and advice and hopefully I can have some fun in my new toy!
cheers
