looks to me like the smaller unit is the actual radio unit.

i've not seen the inside of a 53 plate espace.....but i bet it doesn't have a conventional din sized radio?

that smaller unit has the speaker and aerial connections, as well as power....the red socket i would guess is to link to the display wherever that is.
