the 3.5 second reaction could indicate he was making sure he got the perfect start, as the timing does not start until you move, so the reaction time does not really matter that much.

And it's only just over a second improvement, getting the run hooked up perfectly at the start would give a huge gain if the previous runs had been a bit wheelspinny.
