Default Loft Insulation - Advice Please

I need to replace my loft insulation, basicaly its's really old and missing in places... and all my heat is flying out of the roof ! I was over at my mums house the other night and popped up her loft to see what the council had fitted recently (new insulation). I was amazed to see about 10 inches of insulation ! Way about the hight of the roof joists.

The question / problem i have is this...

I want to replace my insulation but i also want to floor the loft after i have done this to store junk etc up there like everybody else.. lol

Would it reduce the efficency of the thick loft insulation if it was squished down when i floor it, it will end up being squished from 10 inches to about 2 inches ! Or is there some super dooper thinner but just as efficient loft insulation available, not that silver foil stuff, i've heard bad things about condensation problems with that.

Anybody help ?

Cheers
Craig
