Might be a silly thought but does it have a double male ended USB cable? ie you could try another cable, the connector plugs do bugger up and the device won't work. May be worth a go if you haven't tried that first.

Otherwise I'd go for cracking it open and connecting it to a spare plug inside your PC case.
