Its not a switch as such in the handle, its a hall effect sensor.

That pases the information to the ZKE or central body electrics ECU. On later cars there is no ZKE as such but the functions are carried over into other control units, on a MINI its called the BC1 for example.

It wouldnt be impossible to retro fit, but it wouldn't be easy.
