I've just done that, but what does it actually mean?
Have I just disable some functions by doing that or what? Will I ever need to switch it back for anything?

no ,you wont disable it becuase it gives you the option to switch it back on
all the 3g is for so you can see the ungly mug shot when talking and to be honest no fooker does
