"if" is a small word with a big meaning.
"If" he finds a cheap/borrowed/begged/or stolen putter he likes then good for him. as I said above, the best golfer out of a load of us that play together uses the oldest putter I've seen without wood worm.
"If" he finds the only putter he feels exceptionally comfortable which is say, a £200 futura, then it's the only club [as a beginner] I personally think you should be spending the higher end on.
You can't take a shot off EVERY hole with an expensive driver no matter how good it makes you hit a shot.
Either way, it's all down to preference as I originally stated
