well its currently in safe mode, when it first went to safe mode it asked if i would like to do a system restore instead, so i did, but when it restarted it went back to the xp screen with the blue scrolling bar, then went out, and the computer froze from there, but the screen didn't go to standby.

Am in safe mode now, the resolution is already set to 800x600, so am trying a defragment instead, but it is ruddy slow, is still at 1%, and has been for over 5 mins!!
