I use VLC on linux and my windows box for most things as for me its the daddy but download the FFDshow and give it a try with Real or WMP. It has lots of codecs and will kick in automatically with the correct one. You should see an FFDshow sign in the taskbar when its working with a player. I used to use it for films i downloaded, stuff installing endless amounts of codecs.
