fires the scariest thing to me about crashing...
Tetsuya Ota (太田 哲也, Ōta Tetsuya?) is a former racecar driver from Japan. He is best known for the fiery crash he was involved in during a race at Fuji Speedway in May 3, 1998.

Conditions were poor in the race which led a Porsche to swerve off the track, which Ota's Ferrari 355 hit only seconds later. Both cars burst into flames on impact. Ota's car having hit the wall, slid across to the other side of the track, almost collecting another car. He can be seen stumbling from the wreck and lying on the track afterwards. The first aide was another racecar driver. He was able to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher.

Ota suffered 3rd degree burns from the fire but survived.

Tetsuya Ota sued for $2,500,000 US (two and a half million dollars) for pain and suffering on the grounds that the responsible were poorly prepared in first aide response and had uneducated race marshals. Ota settled for $800,000 US.
