Because it tries to aply torque to more loaded wheel changing the balance all the time, there is no locking action of any sort really, it just works in different fashion. Good for front diff though.
Also...I'm not quite sure I know what VC or rather plaed diff in the rear diff are ??
VC - viscous coupler - it is what is fitted as standard. Plated diff is most traditional limited slip diff type - friction plates oppose one wheel spining transfering the torque to the other wheel.
