Actually I kind of agree with you, based on the "energy cannot be created or destroyed" it means anything going into the box that doesnt come out has to be used up as either heat, noise or destroying the surface of the cogs in the box, and it does seem hard to see an entire 100bhp+ going that way, but none the less that is what happens it would appear.
