A corporate BlackBerry requires a BES server yes, but this will work with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino or Novell Groupwise e-mail servers, not just Exchange. However, a personal BlackBerry doesnt link to a BES and instead connects via POP3/SMTP/IMAP connections for e-mail (which you can then specify whether deleting mail off the BlackBerry deletes mail in the mailbox etc), hence the sexy BlackBerry Pearl is available not just to business customers!
