thing is, you have to write up yourself in order for the manager who's reviueing you gives a good bit of feedback to payroll
you've also got to big yourself up so that the company feels that you are worth a bit of a pay increase

last year i got around a £300 bigger payrise than the other guys who work here (even though they were on £2k basic less than me) mainly because of the review which higlighted loads of stuff that i was doing that they didn't realise i did
i also got a bigger bonus payment because i contributed more to the depot than anyone else so it's all good

spending a day writing about what you've done over the past year to earn yourself £800 isn't a bad way to spend time is it
