Dear Mr. Holmes
AP Racing has not received any other reports to date with regards to this Ford clutch quadrant component failing in operation when used with AP Racing uprated clutches; either from our official distributors, of which two are Ford tuning specialist, or from the end user!
Quadrant & Pedal data sheet # P14.039.
This was added to the AP Racing Escort Ø220mm pressure plates from June 1998. With a recommendation to fit the latest Ford quadrant and manual adjust pedal introduced onto the Escort range from 1995 on. The information being that this new set up alleviated first & reverse gear engagement problems experience on some standard cars built prior to this date. APR suggested using this new set up on the RS because if the standard clutch was having disengagement issues then AP Racings uprated unit based on the standard Ford / Borg & Beck unit, could also suffer clutch release problems in some cases. Until this quadrant with its increased 55mm radius became available we had received reports from owners experiencing release issues, this latest Ford component offered a fairly straight forward cure. However if the APR clutch released OK without the mod then there was no need to add it.
Increased pedal loads.
These are higher on the uprated unit but that’s the trade off when using a stronger diaphragm spring allowing for a higher torque to be transmitted. The quadrant mod was not required because of the higher pedal load, but due the higher clamp load / torque unit requiring approx 2mm more of release bearing travel to disengage the clutch over the standard unit.

This quadrant has failed in the same way as your own, but note that it has not had the modification added! Our local Ford Dealer supplies up to 8off part # 1029013 per week into the spares market, so we could deduce from this that they require periodic replacement on standard Escorts; although I’m not suggesting after 1000 miles use!
The Escort Cosworth RS also uses the same quadrant design. AP Racing has supplied thousands of Ø240mm uprated clutches into this market for both competition and road use since its launch in 1991. These larger clutches have the same direct release load (1800N) as the RS Turbo clutch. Again we have had no reports back of any quadrant failures on the Cosworth!
Your quadrant produced in metal is obviously a good solution, but manufacturing costs would be too high for APR to produce when it involves such small numbers.
