Its a process for aluminium blocks to allow the piston to run directly in the block thus getting rid of the steel liner......

You fit steel liners coated with nikasil because its more resistant to massive excess fuelling when running antilag etc.
Common in WRC cars.
Rod Tarry's is like it as well.
