The sensor at the back of the head is the CTS sensor which can indeed give problems, but it would be the same all the time, if bad to the extent of causing it not to start it would be belching soot from sooted up plugs, and be running badly, but certainly not going to hurt checking the CO which needs to be around 2-2.5% CO.
