Default Sapph problems

Car was running fine the other day but then yesterday it was practically undrivable because of severe backfiring. Fuel level was just under quarter tank so topped up to make sure this was not a problem and still the same. I could hear a buzzing sound at one point just by the fuel line when key was turned in the ignition (although engine not running). Not sure if it was a sensor. The car had no power and really struggled.

When i tried to start the car today it wouldn't even start! Turned the key and could just hear the starter whirring. Would not engage, which has stumped me. I got car towed home and now have no clue where to start. Have noticed my fuel pump is a little noisey and there is a wee bit of a whiff of petrol from it so that maybe could be a part of the problem.

Any help would be most appreciated

Thanks in advance,
Delv
