This has happened very recently though if you think about it (if im right)...
FordPartsUK had a limited supply of 17" 7 spoke RS alloy's and I think the majority of them have been bought by people with the intention of selling them on, I know of several people who have just put them into storage for when they thing they can sell them on for a tidy profit.
There was loads on ebay even while fordpartsuk was supplying them and they was reaching over £1k while available for about £450 ish, just people (on ebay) didnt know where to get them.
Unfortunately, it's the world we live in, which is driven by greed. It means when someone genuinely wants something, they will have to pay stupid money for it, because every c*nt has bought them all to sell on for a profit!
