Default Fuel Gauge/Computer

My fuel gauge reads full all the time, was like this when I go the car. Possible diagnosis was given as a fault with the earth connection at the sender unit, which would require the fuel tank to be dropped to gain access.

Any other ideas? If it's a faulty earth wire, can this just be earthed anywhere, or does the fault need to be rectified at the sender unit itself?

Also, my fuel computer has a mind of it's own. Has never given me the reading for mpg, until the past few days, but seems to be jumping around, then the next time I start the car, it won't show a reading.

Also, the range wasn't working, then it decided to work for a week or two, then I put about £30 worht of petrol in, and it told me I had 40 miles until I needed to re-fuel?????

Then the other day, after filling the tank, it still went to 43 miles, then started to go up very gradually!!! It's gone as high as 230 miles (after I'd driven about 50ish from the petrol station). It's now started to go down again, but I don't know whether to trust it or not, or just guess roughly how much I have left by the amount of miles I've done!!??
