Arthur C. Clarke once famously said:

"There are two possibilties; either we are alone in the Universe, or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."

As others have said, it would be foolish (not to mention arrogant) to believe that we're the ONLY life in the Univesre. Whether they've been here, or if certain governments know about their exsistance, are different matters altogether.
