Hi matey - IIRC the dash 34 was set to about 12psi odd in closed connection to the turbo, and then the boost controller does the rest. You cannot use the boost controller spring for any more than this, as the spring will just snap it!
On the std cossie, the amal valve acts as an ECU controlled bleed, but basically it still bleeds off air to make the required boost.
