The standard pistons have around 7mm of material on the crown. Removing 1mm is no issue at all. It's a different thing if you need to. The basic pistons are surprisingly good. I've run ~30psi with the standard bottom end, including the compression ratio. Mostly I would be worried for the conrods which are known to fail when abused.
