It doesnt mean your laptop s screwed mate, just that either the installation of XP, or 2000 or whatever you have on there is corrupt and wont load. you could try using the recovery console. You will need to boot from your original CD to access that. Thats where i would start.

only chance to boot that puppy is off the cdrom or maybe a windows PE environment off a usb stick (depends really on the bios if u can boot from usb)
