Gracy - not read all the replies, but from my expirience (5yrs in the automotive glass trade) there isn't really anything that will remove deep or prominent scratches from glass You can try jewellers rouge, a rubbing compound, but it still only takes out very light scratches, and even then, it doesn't completely remove it.

As far as "doing a good job" changing the screen, like anything you get good fitters and bad fitters. Personally, I pride myself on being a good fitter, and in the last year, where I did over 1000 windscreen changes, I had 6 that leaked, 3 that stress cracked, and 2 that came back for "poor trims" (where the trim lifted of didn't take properly to the screen) Thats a pretty good score as far as I am concerned From a fitters point of view, it is not in our interest to have any screen come back at all, as we loose DOUBLE the ammount of bonus we earn if it does come back. If you were closer, I would do yours myself, as I have done quite a few for RS and XR owners over the years. I have done Squeaks (Rob Williams) XR4x4Ti twice now, did Fil's XR4x4 a couple years ago, did a Saff cos for another RSOC BB/Passionford member, Jim's XR4i, Scooby's (XROC member) entire car (all glass) and a couple others aswell.

Of course there ARE factors when working on old Saff's tho - rust being the main problem. Many many screens are taken out to find the aperture behind the screen has rusted/corroded - this can be a big problem as new bond will never stick to it perfectly like when it was new. There are tricks to working with this - anti-rust primers we use so that the primer used for applying the glue to has a smoother area to adhere to etc, but as we all know - once rust has set in, it only ever gets worse
