either way (that above is a wooley guess) I'm betting it's an OS problem not a hardware one.
try using knoppix or another live CD to boot your pc with, will prove the hard ware is okay (except HDD)
Although some versions of XP Windows locks you out from
use due to hardware changes, it still prompts you for activation at the desktop which can be done over the internet or via phone... you can also access it via safe mode.
If it locked you out completely nobody would be aware of the situation or the number that you are required to call to reactivate.
