The big rails are for the front-links for the solid beam axle to swing within, I would imagine. The further forwards you can have the pivot, the less front-back movement there is for an equivalent verticle movement. This is important in roll or single-wheel bump/rebound, as otherwise the axle would turn relative to the car and produce a rear steer effect
