Could be the motherboard breaking down, when on its side the heatsink etc creates stress on the board from gravity etc.

I run mine without the side on ever since it broke in the summer (2 days solid in the blistering heat) and then it packed up again 2 weeks later - although in hind sight it probably would of helped to have the side on it when i spilt 7up the other day
