There isn't a CVH on the planet without a worn cam

From all the experiences i have had, if the cam is worn enough to affect performance, it will also be tapping as it chews the followers up and they can no longer take up the clearance in the valve train.

you can also tell a lot by removing the cam and inspecting the lobes
