I always run mythTV as it can be configured to do exactly what you require, its got a smaller footprint and uses less resources than Microsofts Media Centre and its FREE.... My complete Media Player OS which plays all video formats, all music formats plus general web surfing, mail, skype etc comes in at 712 mb you have no chance of making Windows Media Centre this small without loosing functionality.
