Storage Card based systems are common place and in fact the mini-moto pc posted in this thread uses a Compact Flash the one found
here it uses a flash card in a PCMCIA reader for the
flash based firewall
They are fantastic although drive performance does not improve drastically I generally use them due to size restrictions due to the types of cases I use
