Default Crank Pulley

Probably a silly question but:

How do you get the crank pulley off? I thought maybe jaming a screwdriver or somthing through the pulley and onto the engine, to stop the pulley turning?

The engine has the crank pulley with the 3 threaded holes in it. And the car is off the ground with no back brakes. so cant lock up the transmition.

Any ideas??
