A brace might stiffen the shell but how would slight flexing of the struts towards each other affect the suspension geometry

It will help the springs and dampers to work better though..
mike was dreaming he had a WRC set up for a moment

on the front with McPherson strut this is the case but as Martin says its to improve the body shell so your dampers work better on the rear.
