my camera sets the brightness depending what i ut the little X in the middle of the pic over... if i point it at a dark thing it makes the pic really bright, if i point it over a light thing it makes it darker... see if it does it on yours (should be visible on the display if the brightness changes...)

also have you got the camera set to outdoor mode (whatever that is)
