Dont know much about FRST's but is it the overboost protection?

On ERST's with a standard ECU the ignition will cut over 9 psi or so.

The amal valve is there to control the boost level, if this has been disconnected as you describe it could be overboosting. How long have you had the car?

Thats where a dumpvalve would usually be.

Dont think so, I imagine it is all sensor controlled on EEC-IV. Again, on ERST's you have a small pipe which goes from the front of the compressor housing to the ECU. I think the MAF sensor would remove the need for that.
