When you say grit mate do you mean GRIT or is it something like tree sap/tar and does it lay on top of the paint/clear coat???
whatever it is i would try a clay bar on it with some QD(quick detailer)
Megiuars do something you can buy off the shelf in most halfords

if your happy with the results of the clay i would do the whole car to get that real smooth finish and then polish and wax the hole car.
As for your wet look finish.
Alot of things to think about IE wax choise, what you want to spend on a wax, and what time you want to spend waxing.
You say youve tryed Megs 3 stage and autoglym what else have you tryed if anything???
Sometimes you need to play with alot of WAXs to get the finish your after and you may not get that finish the first time by hand.
If you want an off the shelf WAX for a good shine i would go for NXT and try that.
