The "ti" moniker appeared in the mid 60s and stood for "Touring Internationale" - not to be confused with the Touring models (estate versions that came later ) . First seen on carbed BMWs and then they did the 2002tii which was injection as well.

I think it's supposed to be a link back to the small 3-series predecessors
