For what little its worth, my view is this:
i think the diff bearings were worn (itsdone about 30K miles with 500bhp or so hasnt it doug?)
This allowed excessive movement
Shock loads occurred as a result of that, and that is what broke the casing
Be interesting to hear from Bernie though, as im sure he knows far better than i do!
