Dan - sikhs wear turbans as they do not cut their hair and thus have it tied into a knot at the top of the head. The turban is placed on top to cover the hair. The turban (and in essence the long hair) represents one of the 5 "k"s that symbolises sikhism.

Asking to remove the turban is seen as an insult and forcing someone to do it will cause a massive shit storm.
