Too easy to go down the route, like France did, of restricting people's civil liberties by banning any outward display of religious preference, and that is never a good thing!
I actually agree

that it makes communication difficult, and wearing a veil IS a barrier when two people try to communicate. That is pure common sense, and is not meant to offend anyone. Muslim councils that have reacted angrily to Straw's comments have entirely missed the point.
It's not a dig at a religion - just a matter of fact observation. Muslim counclis would have been far better off just saying "yes, we like wearing veils - what's the problem?" instead of getting all high and mighty and getting offended at every opportunity.
Aside from all that, there should never be a case where government dictates what people can and cannot wear.
