Try putting the gear in reverse. Then look from the left side to the selector under of the car. On the bottom of the cover it has an opening inside which you see the end of the gear stick (if in reverse). There is a small hole across the end of the gearstick. This is the correct method however it rarely works well if your selector linkage has slack in it, which by this stage in life most of them do
If there's any slack, the plastic parts don't cost that much and are still available. Or better yet, fit the Puma gear selector.
