The problem in with huge ports like that (it's a Nick W flowed manifold) you then have to "work" the Cometic gasket i.e. open it up too.........

In the end the O rings make more sense....as GT2 said it's common WRC practice now..........Also in Forumula 1 & touring cars they hav'nt used paper gaskets for years.
