To be honest, I would take similar mpg (circa 30) if the insurance was considerably less but the 0-60 was in the right area and the car was fun to drive. Just sick of paying close to £200 a month for insurance.

That's why I've considered a Passat 1.8t. But they are quoted as 8.6 0-60 which seems very slow for a turbo. Could no doubt take that to Stu for some improvement but not sure how much faster it could be made without spending a lot. As for fun to drive, not sure it would be

205 1.9 Gti could be a contender but too dated IMO.
